Lenskart Review – Buying Spectacles & Contact Lenses Online

Being a lover of online shopping, it is strange how resistant I have been to buying glasses or contact lenses online on sites such as Lenskart. So this week I decided to take the plunge: I would buy my Bausch & Lomb monthly disposable Toric contact lenses online on Lenskart.com.

Buying Contact Lenses Online on Lenskart

Shopping for contact lenses online is something I’m willing to do. The product is standardised; I know my exact power. I know the box of lenses I will be getting is exactly the same as what I would have gotten from my local optician. 

Know Your Power

I have terrible eyesight. I am highly myopic and suffer from astigmatism. All this doesn’t really change my life much, aside from adding a “spherical,” “cylindrical,” and “axis” columns to my eye prescription sheet. Nonetheless, I go for an eye checkup (including retina checkup) every year. Hence, I know that my power has been stable for the last couple of years.

If you don’t know your power, Lenskart offers a pretty cool at home eye checkup service called Opto for Rs 50 in all major metros. 

However, if you have terrible eyesight like me, I’d recommend getting a thorough checkup at your local ophthalmologist first. They will also be able to accurately tell you the power for your contact lenses (it’s different from you spectacles power).

I logged onto Lenskart.com to buy my contact lenses. Firstly, the homepage was quite confusing from a UI perspective. There are 4 navigation menus on the top of the screen, one at the bottom, and some buttons on both the LHS and RHS of the screen!? The product itself is a little messy, a little confusing, a little buggy. They could improve it by hiring some good designers and improving their UI/UX.

Anyway, clicked on “Contact Lenses” and came across a page which had contact lenses sorted by brand, disposability, power, and colour (with 5% and 15% discounts clearly labelled). It was quite cool. However, on this page, I did get confused. I knew I wanted Bausch & Lomb Toric lenses. The image for the “High CYL Power” category had the exact image of my contact lenses — so I clicked on it. The inside page had some random other lens, so I had to go back.

I found my lenses under the ‘Bausch & Lomb category — Softlens (Toric). 

Prices on Lenskart.com vs Local Opticians

The MRP on the Bausch & Lomb contact lenses is Rs 1540 per box. That becomes Rs 3080 for a pair of 2 boxes (for 6 months). My local optician, after some pleading “oldest customer, kuch to discount dijeye”, would reduce it to around Rs 2700.

On Lenskart – the retail price was already at Rs 2772. After discount, the cost became Rs 2474 without adding any coupon code (just add to cart). It was quite cool.

Entering your prescription / power on Lenskart

When you’ve selected your lenses, and click on ‘Buy Now’, Lenskart prompts you to enter your prescription.

I had a box of my old  lenses, so I found it quite easy to enter all the fields: SPH, CYL, AXIS. There was a BC field which I entered in the optional notes. However, you also have the option of simply taking a photograph of your prescription and uploading it. They also have a converter from eyeglass power to contact lens power. They also have a “How To Read Your Prescription” guide. And an “I don’t know my power, Call me” button. 

All this is really convenient and takes away from the fear of ordering the wrong lenses online!

Lenskart Delivery Time

After payment, I got a shock saying that my particular lenses would take 15-17 business days. That seemed exceptionally, horribly long. I felt a little angry, wondering why they hadn’t informed me earlier, so that I could have ordered from my local optician instead. (I need the contacts urgently).

Much to my surprise (and slightly jaded delight), the lenses were delivered in delivered in 3 days. Shopping on Lenskart was a great experience overall. With all the options and filters, it gives users looking to buy sunglasses, spectacles and contact lenses a whole range that are unavailable on general online shops such as Myntra. 

Why I do NOT want to shop online for glasses or spectacles

I have a few reasons, some of them quite personal, some of them may strike a chord with a greater audience.

  1. I’ve been going to the same optician for the past 20 years, since I was 9 years old. I get great service, great discounts, home delivery.
  2. I don’t see how you can buy spectacles or sunglasses online without trying a hundred pairs. Specs that look good in a picture usually look terrible on my face. 
  3. Aside from looks, some spectacles just feel more comfortable than others. The width, the fit, everything matters. Seeing picture of a pair of spectacles and measuring my face isn’t going to give me the reassurance
  4. Lenskart has a measuring thingy on their website, which takes a photograph of your face using a credit card or something. That’s too much effort for me!
  5. They also have 3D Virtual Try On page on their website. Again, too much effort for me!

I bought my spectacles from my local shop instead 🙂

Lenskart Coupons & Offers

Lenskart is trying very hard to get customers like me to take the plunge online. Currently, for new customers they have a ‘Lenskart First Frame Free Offer’ — if you sign up, you get the frames free. You only have to pay for the lenses. You can browse from a lot of frames here (http://www.lenskart.com/eyeglasses/popular-searches/first-pair-free.html), each frame worth approximately Rs 1299. The lenses cost anywhere from Rs 545 to Rs 2500+, depending on the quality of the lenses, the thinness, etc. It’s a good deal.

They are also offering 5% to 15% discounts on purchase of contact lenses (without coupon codes) — just add to cart.

    I bought a ultra thin lenses and I got a john jacobs frame at discounted price from Lenskart. However the frame was of really poor quality and broke within a month of buying. Lenskart is selling off its poor quality chinese frames along with the lenses. Once the frame is broken you will have a hard time finding another frame that would fit the lenses.

    I have visited once and getting daily 4 to 5 message due to that I have lost so many important messages .. Even i tried to contact with customer care they were also nt supporting. One of customer care had directly disconnected call. Very poor customer service. I don’t like and even bot suggest to my frnd also due to daily disturbing messages.. I hate lenskart

    No after sales service/repairs

    I bought at-least 4-5 Specs in last 6 months but this time the real problem came out, my glass got broken and the company denied to provide any after sales repair/ replacement/re-fitment of the glass that to when I was ready to pay for repair/ replacement/re-fitment .
    My just 15 days old specs worth Rs. 4500 got useless after one of the glass got broken .
    Thanks for opening my eyes to the limitations of online retail portals

    The customer care services are not good , i brought lens and frame from lenskart. After some months the frame having some problem bcs the frame is not good at all. I went to near by lenskart shop , they were tell simply that they cant do anything better you brought another one and it will cost only about 2500. i just fix my problem ,payed only 20 rupees in a small lens shop.

    i bought John Jacabs frame from Lenskart store which they have boasted as premium Italian brand and it is waste of money and any local brands are better than this one. Also don’t buy from Lenskart franchisee store at any cost. Lenkart will wash away their hands saying that you need to go to that particular store and resolve the issue if any. Lenskart will not take any responsibility. I faced issues during delivery and now with the product. Just a word of caution folks! Beware before you buy!!

    I will keep it short
    Placed order in January, from Newport in United Kingdom. They they send it to NewDelhi !! Some fellow thought Newport is in NewDelhi !! Got the product after 30 days in February.
    Only bought it coz spectacles are quite expensive in UK and wanted to try this new concept.

    However the quality is so poor that the screws of one of the arms of the spectacles broke off while I was walking and I had to suddenly react to catch the glasses. I had such a horrible day due to this that I had to cancel all my meetings for the day and to return home in public transport as could not drive with broken spectacles.!!
    Reported to customer service by email from the UK and they replied to come to India to get it repaired.!! Explained to them that I am based in the UK but they send the same reply again – morons ! Pretty much stating that suck it up on my own or foot a £500 air ticket to fix the screws in their product.
    I ended up walking into Local store in the UK to get a new pair.

    So any overseas customer reading this make your own judgement if you wish to spend your money on this bunch of cowboy opticians. !!

    All Glitter No Gold!

    The website is user friendly, looks gorgeous and technically the website had no competition whatsoever. The offers sound great and tempting. Advertisements are attractive too.
    BUT THE ACTUAL SERVICE is horrible.

    EYE CHECK UP
    ============
    I asked them to do home visit for eye check up.
    They did.
    The analyst who came home gave me card for lens power.
    It was written so badly I couldn’t understand.

    ORDER
    =====
    Based on that visit, I placed online order and uploaded the lens power card given by their own analyst.
    At first, they did not understand it themselves but when I asked them to send the analyst again to clear the confusion, they denied saying they do not provide service in my area – this is same area where the analysts have come just two days ago for eye check up and now the same people cannot come there again.
    Then they told me the analyst had uploaded the power details and based on that they can proceed. Wow!

    DELIVERY/REPLACEMENT

    Once the glasses got delivered, found the frame was damn loose and did not fit at all.
    Sent it back.
    Asked them to suggest frame so the same issue won’t occur again. They were clueless.
    They couldn’t answer and asked me to go for anything I find okay based on my photo upload and placing frame on my photo.
    When I argued it would give me jist of how it’ll look but not how it’ll fit, they had no answer.
    Finally, I gave up! Asked for refund which I got but this mess took around 15-20 days and finally I had to go to a local shop anyway for the glasses.

    They don’t really know what they are doing. If frame and lens fits and works for you, it’s by luck. No one at lenskart is sure about it.

    Before write this review I want to make sure everyone I am not a Lenskart competitor I am nonsense costumer who has face so much pain in last one month.

    I am stupid IT manager who has to work 15 hour in front of laptop and after reading this entire story hope everyone can feel my entire pain.

    First of all this is my humble request to everyone, Please if you want to save your life and eyes never choose lenskart in entire life.

    Lenskart is one of the f.uckuing company, I ever saw in my life, below points will proof it.

    Thanks for giving us this much pain, hope it will continue for other customer as well(it’s my mistake, I am part Lenskart).

    What I am going to do now, I have very good Influence on social network, first I am going to rate so your sales will be banded .

    I have already banded five new customer but I am not happy with this I want something more, I am not sure if consumer court will help here, but I promise I will try my best to reach there as well!

    Costumer support is worst

    No escalation team

    No support after sales

    Product quilt is very bad

    Etc……….innumerable

    Let me share my experience with you,

    I have visited to doctor on 17th March(for a proof, PFA), she suggest me to get eyeglasses ASAP.

    According to her I have to get it within 2 days maximum.

    Here story began……

    1st order to lenskart on 18th march, I have canceled this order in 1 hour after reaching home, because store team did’t explain about offers and product quality and about lenses.

    2nd order, lenskart canceled it without any call because product was out of stock and they gave this information after five days of placing the product.

    3rd order placed on 25th march, they promised it will get deliver in 5 days maximum.

    After 3 days I have call in costumer care and they inform product is under feting and It will get dispatch by today(28th march), after this I have not received any massage in next two days because I am having so much pain in my eyes and I was not able to wait anymore, again I called to costumer care and what reply I have received from them is shocking for me.

    Sir product is under quality check and we will dispatched it by today EOD(30th March),

    Because I didn’t receive any SMS in another two days, again I called them(I was killing myself because of so much pain), reply was really frustrated me, Sir product is under quality check and we will dispatched it by today EOD(2nd April), wow………….

    And they gave me 300 RS discount coupon as a apologies money(because it is delay from there side) and this amount I can use in my next purchase with lenskart, these F*uckers is really think after this much pain I will use their product again in my entire life.

    I have waited for next 3days by 5th of April I have received mail with subject line, “Sir your order got canceled thanks for shopping with lenskart “

    After this mail I was like feeling to kill myself, why I have choose a F*ucking company.

    Again I called costumer care And their response(Sir you called us today morning and inform us that you will not available in town for next two days so we canceled you old order and we place new one) and it will deliverer to you in 3 days…. I was like…. What the F*uck man.

    Afetr this all F*ucking things, I have decided to move out from lenskart and get my eyeglass from somewhere else because now I am not able to work in office and home.

    A nonsense guys came in picture his name is Mr. Paritosh(he told that he belong from CEO escalation desk), he took two hour to convince me so I give him another chance to place a new order.

    I am attaching all conversation happen with Paritosh from first days, Please go through it, everything is self-explanatory

    Finally…. after a month Mr. Paritosh made it and I have received my product by 18th April.

    Another funny staff after receiving product, The lenses I have order during checkout it was British optics Blue-Cut lenses(Price 2290), What I have received normal KLAR lenses(Price Free of cost by lenskart)

    Lenses power was also not correct and I was feeling more pain in my eyes with eyeglasses.

    Mr. Paritosh has send a specialist who was supposed to help me to check eye power and Blue-Cut lenses quality…………….this specialist guys was a cartoon and he came with a lensometer which was not working(PFA attachment of pictures and video).

    He took my eyeglasses back and still…………………………………I am waiting for my glasses!(20th April)

    I am working in HCL Technology(We have total 33000 employee in Noida, One broadcast mail is enough to create impacts over to 33000 employee), Just watch & see J………………

    I am going to do my job, I will make you guys to cry on Facebook, google, Twitter, LinkedIn, you will get my name SANTOSH everywhere against lenskart.

    I will try my best to stop all sell, so no one can cheated in future by lenskart in future like me!

    I did my job, I have stopped my meeting and took some time to make everyone aware about this nonsense company.
